Dario Napoli Modern Manouche Project feat. Paulus Schäfer

ITA, NLD

Hot, electric, funky, semi acoustic swing

Imagine Django Reinhardt regaining the use of all 5 fingers and hooking up with Jaco Pastorius: hot, electric, funky, semi acoustic swing!

Although Sinti guitarist Django Reinhardt is the main inspiration behind the Modern Manouche Project, Sicilian-born and Milan-based bandleader & guitarist Dario Napoli includes elements of more modern musical styles such as bebop, funk and modern jazz in his version of gypsy swing, which has been featured at some of the most prestigious jazz and gypsy jazz festivals and venues, Royal Liverpool Philarmonic, Pizza Express Live, Django Amsterdam Festival (Bimhuis), Djangofolllies Festival, Django in June, as well as the Eddie Lang Jazzfest, CullyJazz, Pisa Jazz, Valdarno Jazz, etc. The result is an unpredictable and exuberant sound, which steals from various musical eras leading you through a rich and vibrant sonic experience, without ever totally abandoning the gypsy imprint of Django.

The fact that Paulus Schäfer (born 1978) is one of the most talented gypsy jazz guitarists in The Netherlands, is widely recognized in the gypsy jazz scene. Born in the Dutch Sinti community, he learned to play guitar at an early age by listening to his idol Django Reinhardt and other great Sinti guitarists, but he learned most from Wasso Grünholz - a legend within the Sinti community, who encouraged him to develop his own sound.

Shortly after replacing Jimmy Rosenberg on lead guitar in the Gypsy Kids, Paul started the Paulus Schäfer Gypsy Band and in 2002 produced his debut album "Into the Light", followed by many concerts at countless jazz festivals in Europe, Russia, the United States and Canada. Paul is much in demand as a soloist and has shared the stage with many musicians, including Biréli Lagrène, Stochelo Rosenberg, Al Di Meola, Fapy Lafertin, Jan Akkerman, Tcha Limberger, etc., and has been invited to perform on many albums. In the meantime he also has eight albums to his own name, including "Letter to van Gogh", a tribute to the Dutch artist.
